RF: What message are you trying to carry in your music?
Gyula: We want to share personal stories from our own community. How we grew up and how we live today in the post-communist ghettos.
Do you believe Rap music can be the next generation of popular Romani music?
I don’t know. But I’m doing my best to make it popular.
Do Roma in general listen to a lot of hip-hop?
Roma in Hungary are familiar with Fekete Vonat (Black Train – a very popular Romani hiphop group from the 1990s) and they still listen to them even though they don’t exist anymore. Many young roma are fans of American hiphop, artists like 2Pac, Notorious BIG, Flo Rida, Kanye West…
Who are your influences, musical or otherwise?
2Pac, Biggie, Michael Jackson.
How many are in the band?
We are 5 people. We have a DJ, bass guitarist, 2 dancers and myself.
What do you do in the band?
I write the lyrics and I perform.
Any concerts yet?
Not yet. We’re working on finishing the 1st album and then we want to promote the band. So this is an EXCLUSIVE interview.
What was behind your decision to name the band ‘Gypsy Magic City’?
The world of Roma is full of surprises. And we use magic in our world to survive. It’s an enormous fight for survival, but we also have many stories of exciting adventures.
